A workout challenge

7 03 2009

OK, so it looks like the momentum I had for the first few weeks on the elliptical is taking a short pause. I went to the podiatrist this week to check out a sharp pain in the ball of my left foot, and heel pain. The good news is that x-rays showed no fractures, arthritis, or heel spurs. The bad news is that I appear to have neuroma (pinched nerve between the third and fourth digits of the left foot, and plantar fasciitis (inflamed plantar fascia- the connecting band that supports the arch of the foot). I am taking a few weeks off of the elliptical trainer and outdoor walking for exercise, but my nutritional focus is intact. The break in the cold weather should allow me to move into biking as time permits.

You should get some weights or a punching bag so you can work your upper body while your feet are out of commission.

How about bicycling, would that have the same problem as the elliptical? We just gained an extra hour of daylight after work you know.

Actually, the doctor did say that the elliptical is not out of the question, as long as it doesn’t aggravate the nerve problem. As the bike doesn’t require my feet to bear my weight as well as propulsion force, it should cause less stress on my feet. Since the problem is so easily aggravated by activity, I will probably abstain from even biking until after my next visit with the podiatrist. I have a weight machine available at work, so lunchtime upper body workouts will probably be the order of the day until then.

Don’t do anything to aggravate it worse. You need to heal or you will re-injure yourself. Just try to really focus on your nutrition and in no time you’ll be back to it! I’m so impressed on your accomplishments so far!!!
